Bonnen Reappointed as Speaker Pro Tempore of the Texas House, Named Chair of Ways & Means Committee

Insider's Report Vol. 10 No. 12

As the 84th Session of the Texas Legislature kicks into high gear, Speaker Joe Straus announced House committee appointments on Wednesday afternoon.  I am grateful for the Speaker’s confidence in me to serve the State of Texas and House District 25 in several important roles this session.

I have been reappointed as Speaker Pro Tempore of the Texas House of Representatives, a distinguished position I held last session that enables me to support Speaker Straus in unifying the House so that we can effectively represent all Texans that trust us to be their voice in Austin.  As Speaker Pro Tem, I will also preside over the House proceedings in the Speaker’s absence.

I am also honored to be named Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee. My role as the leader of this important committee is to oversee all legislation that pertains to our state’s Tax Code, including property, sales, and business taxes that affect the daily lives of Texas citizens.  Our new Governor Greg Abbott has stated that he "will reject any budget that is sent to my desk that does not include lower taxes for businesses." It is my goal for the Ways and Means Committee to work with the Governor and House leadership to craft legislation that will ease the tax burden for all of Texas.

Additionally, I will once again serve as a member of the House Committee on Natural Resources.  I requested to continue my membership on this committee so that I am still at the forefront of addressing the water issues faced by Brazoria and Matagorda Counties, as well as the entire State of Texas.

I do not take these distinguished appointments lightly and thank Speaker Straus for providing me these opportunities to have a positive impact on our great state. I plan on working hard to make sure that the Texas Legislature is serving the citizens of Texas to the highest standards.
