Insider's Report Vol. 11 No. 2
Today, Speaker Joe Straus announced House committee appointments for the 85th Session of the Texas Legislature. I am humbled by the trust and confidence the Speaker has placed upon me to serve the State of Texas and House District 25 in several important roles this session.
I have been appointed Speaker Pro Tempore of the Texas House of Representatives, a distinguished position I also held in 2013 and 2015, that enables me to support Speaker Straus in uniting the House so that we can effectively represent all Texans that trust us to be their voice in Austin. As Speaker Pro Tem, I also preside over the House proceedings in the Speaker’s absence.
I am also honored to be reappointed Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee for a second consecutive session. My primary responsibility in this role is to oversee all legislation that pertains to our state’s Tax Code, including property, sales, and business taxes that affect the daily lives of Texas citizens. It is my goal for the Ways and Means Committee to build upon the significant tax reductions we enacted last session by bringing greater transparency and accountability to our property tax system and further ease the tax burden for all of Texas.
Additionally, I am excited to serve as a member of the House Committee on Culture, Recreation, and Tourism. This position will put me at the forefront of promoting the natural beauty and tourism opportunities offered by Brazoria and Matagorda Counties, as well as the entire State of Texas, while also supporting Texas' rich culture of hunting and fishing.
I am deeply grateful that Speaker Straus has provided me these opportunities to have a positive impact on our great state.
