Bonnen Authors State Sovereignty Resolution

Insider's Report Vol. 7, No. 7

This week, I co-authored HCR 50 to send a strong statement to Congress that reaffirms state sovereignty over all powers not otherwise enumerated and granted to the federal government by the U.S. Constitution.

Many of you have voiced your support for this legislation and I strongly agree with you that Texas should not stay idle on this important issue.  As a staunch supporter of the Tenth Amendment, I fundamentally believe that all power not specifically delegated to the federal government by the Constitution should be reserved to the states and to the people.  Certain mandates currently coming from Washington overstep the size and scope of the federal government and this legislation calls for their cease and desist.

Laws affecting Texas should be left in the hands of Texans and the balance of power restored to where the federal government is entrusted to govern only as a last resort.  Many federal programs and initiatives, such as the recently proposed gun and ammunition legislation, infringe on our right of self governance.

As the saying goes, a government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have.  The Texas Legislature needs to be allowed to preside over itself and we must remind Washington when it is overstepping its constitutional authority.

Over twenty other states in various regions have passed or are considering legislation similar to HCR 50 and I am proud to lend my support to reassert Texas' autonomy as a state.
