"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed"
-2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution
As of today, our personal freedoms are under constant assault from Washington D.C. Many are unaware, disinterested or complicit in Washington's assault on individual liberty. However, Texas, along with a few other states have continually fought the good fight and stood up to federal over-reach. Today, I am proud to share with you that I stand with others to protect Texans' right to bear arms by co-authoring HB 553.
The primary concern of this piece of legislation is protection for the law enforcement community from being forced to enforce unconstitutional laws as well as shoring Texans' constitutional rights to responsible gun ownership. It is modeled on a bill pending before Wyoming's legislature. This legislation is a bold shout to Washington that Texas isn't going to take their overreach lying down. In Texas, we're fighters.
In addition to HB 553, be assured that I have always fought for your 2nd Amendment rights. I am a card-carrying member of both the N.R.A. and the Texas State Rifle Association, and I earned an A+ rating from both of these admirable groups. In light of recent and tragic events, there are many questions surrounding school security, concealed carry, and other firearms proposals before the legislature this session. Please be assured I will be examining these through the lens of a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment. I believe we can balance the safety concerns of our students, educators, and lawful gun owners while protecting our individual liberty and constitutional principles, as well as our loved ones.
